Meditation: We must listen for God speaking through each other
The problem is:
In order to speak to you;
For you to understand;
It seems like I must speak as an adult.
But for me to tell you the truth;
For us to truly communicate;
For your heart to hear me;
I must speak as a child.
And it may very well be
that there are no words at all
that express what we feel.
In which case
I ask that you imagine
the tears in my eyes
and the way my face crumples
and bends.
Somewhere
the other parts of our hearts
are hidden
Today we can only
try and hope
to remember.

Finding Joy -or- A Light In Dark Places
Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
John 14:23 Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
If someone could show us a way back to joy from these hard, sad, dark places, would we not seize it and follow it, like a lover follows his or her beloved, like a bee follows the scent of nectar, like a bird or squirrel following a trail of seeds?
I have the way, but it means giving something up. Here it is, in six steps. Think of it as a half-price twelve-step program:
- Give Up
- Smile
- Love
- Make Do
- Help Others
- Start Over
With Love,
LE

I Believe
Antiphon: Love rejoices in the truth
I believe in God the Creator,
Who gives us breath and life,
Maker of all that is.
I believe in Jesus the Christ;
Wholly God and Wholly Man,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
And was born to a maid named Mary,
Who was tormented by Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was entombed.
Who ministered to the dead,
And whom the gates of hell and death cannot restrain.
Three days after his death, he arose,
And ascended into heaven,
He sits on the right hand of God the Creator.
He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The Church, the Body of Christ,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.

Answer
Did you think
That all you had to do was read
That all you had to do was pray
That all you had to do was recognize me?
I am sorry
that the answer is not so simple
and that this is not all that is required
But in truth
what is required of you is much more
When everyone else is aligned with evil
You must speak of good
When the evil are dying
You must save them, and
When you are dying
You must speak of life
Did you notice the special deference allocated my son
And his disciples?
Know that they are not alone
And that you will share with them
The rewards of my kingdom
If you can gird yourself
with the word.
Nothing comes for free
And your sacriifice
Is not wasted
But the reward
Is also
Not visible
In this world
The peace of God
Such as it is
Be with you.
In response to 'Unclean'.

You Are Given Now
We have only a moment
Not an hour
Or a day
Or a week
Or a month
Or years, decades, centuries, millennia
We have only a moment to trust
A moment to love
A moment to care
A moment to believe
Who that was who came before
- you cannot know
And who comes after
- you cannot see
But you have now
Use it to believe the best
To do the best
And be as much
As fun
As awesome
As inspired
As you can
You are given now
Use it

Emily Dickinson on Hope
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I’ve heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
May God bless your hopes and prayers with love and peace.

Who Is?
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
John 7:29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
John 8:23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
John 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
John 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my [sheep], and am known of mine.
John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
John 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will [my] Father honour.
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for [so] I am.
John 13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he].
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe me that I [am] in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
John 15:5 I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 16:32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
John 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
Exd 3:6 Moreover he said, I [am] the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Exodus 3:13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, [when] I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What [is] his name? what shall I say unto them?
Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Jesus Is.
Peace,

Here's Mud In Your Eye:
100 Words on Dirt (John 9:1-11):
He rubbed dirt in his eyes!
What?
The man they are calling ‘Teacher’.
Oh, the new prophet-guy, Jesus. You said he put dirt in someone’s eyes?
Worse, he took dirt, he spit on it, made mud and rubbed it in this man’s eyes!
The man didn’t try to stop him?
No, No, he was blind.
What, it wasn’t bad enough that he was blind in the first place? Didn’t anyone else try to stop him?
No, we didn’t think of it – and it made him see!
He puts dirt in people’s eyes and makes them see; now that’s a miracle.
Peace,
LE

The Others
It seems like there are always 'others'.
Bad people, stupid people, ignorant people;
people we don't like;
People it is ok to hate.
Perhaps their last name is Clinton,
Or perhaps their last name is Bush;
Or Paul, or Kennedy, or Obama;
Or perhaps 'the others' are a race;
Or a belief;
Or a gender;
Or a sexual orientation;
Or a nationality;
Or a class or category.
We hate them, and everyone who likes them.
We hate what they represent.
We put bumper-stickers on our cars awash in hate or contempt;
We post vitrol on websites,
We wear buttons and T-shirts that drip anger, lies, and hatred.
We tell jokes that dehumanize;
We repeat slander;
We mock;
We make angry, racist, sexist, and paranoid comments.
We find it hard to relate to anyone who likes the other.
Who sees good in them.
We can't countenance a single good thought about them.
And this is unfair.
It is unfair to the other.
It is unfair to those who love or appreciate them.
It is unfair to the world of people who don't want to pass a litmus test to even speak to us.
Or who find that in our presence their speech must be censored.
And it is unfair to us ourselves - because hate blinds us to the truth.
And the truth usually lies in a third place,
Distant from the hills and trenches of our petty wars.
And it is to the truth that we must find our way.
If we can be honest with each other,
If we can hear the voice of the other and not blot it out,
Not block it out with hate;
Not ignore it.
Not censor it.
Not turn it off.
Not walk away.
If we can be in dialog with the other;
We will be wiser people.
We will be richer people.
We may be kinder people.
We may find better leaders.
We can step aside from our anger.
We can cease our fighting.
But first we need to open the gates of our heart and truly listen.
And open our minds to truly hear.
May We Find Peace

Dreaming of the Father
I dreampt that I was a father,
An adoptive father,
Posessed of a particular race,
A race different than my usual;
And that I had seven adopted children,
Of all different races,
At first I was suprised,
That I had adopted so many children, and that I had dared to adopt children of other races;
But then I saw what a joy and wonder it was;
and how full of love we were;
I saw that it was good in a profound way;
And very, very right.
Happy Dreams

After Isaiah 2:
(Subverted lightly from the NRSV)
It will come to pass that the Lord will establish his house among the nations, it shall be raised above the hills and all the world shall see it's light. Many peoples will say; ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths,’ So all nations shall stream to the house of the Lord, and out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. The Lord shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they study war any more.
My brothers and sisters, let us walk again in the light of the Lord! For we have forsaken God's ways and wander in foolishness.

Seeing Truth in the Wasteland
In the waste-land near the train-station the wild grapes are gone past. Now the wild grasses display their fruit, and rose-hips shine bright red between the leaves of the sweetbriar.
Nearby there is a circuit box that handles power for the station and its night-time illumination. Looking at it, I see an electric eye, aimed at the heavens, rigged to tell the circuit box if it is day or night, if the lights at the station need to be turned on, or not.
The electric eye is covered with shiny glass, and beneath the glass its electronics are a reddish blue. -Which has attracted a beetle with bright red and black markings, who is doing its best to cover the eye with its body. So far, the electric eye is not fooled.
While I contemplate this, an adventursome chipmunk scampers over my foot and stops underneath me to give me a sniff. As I don't seem to be food, it scoots away, quick as thought, in search of larder for the winter. 'Try the grass seed', I think.
We on the earth are good at sensing the hours and seasons of the planet, and figuring out what is good food, and what is not.
But with the food of the spirit, we are often not so good. We lay up poison in our wine-cellars, we store away pebbles instead of wheat. We look at the sky, and we see the bug that is in the way, and remember little of the actuality in front of us, good or bad.
Test the spirit of the times. Taste what is in front of you, and if it is poison, spit it out. Test what you see, and clear your vision of that which blocks the truth. Test what you hear, and clear your ears of falsehood. Judge with right judgment, and keep your wits about you.
If you walk about with your eyes blocked, will you not stumble and hurt yourself? And if what you believe is lies, or your thinking is based on anger, will not your decisions lead to disaster and ruin?
If the bug, and the chipmunk are signs, perhaps they are hopeful ones. Perhaps they show that we can and will see the truth, and choose the true food, and see true light.
May it be so for us all.

The redemption of Bully McFister
I looked up Bully McFister today
You know, the one that used to steal your lunch money, and hit you for no reason? Who liked shooting small animals with his bb-gun and bragging about it? At length? The one who liked to make fists with one knuckle sticking out and hit us as hard as he could in the bicep to give us bruises? That guy, you remember.
Well I felt like looking up the old crew and I 'Googled' his name. I thought I might at 'best' see a police blotter report of a robbery or a shootout, or even more likely nothing at all. But no, he pops right up, I see evidence of a creative soul, a sharp mind, an analytic, go-getting man who writes beautifully. I enjoy reading what he writes, and he is relatively prolific!
I squint at his picture in awe, trying to see the wise-acre who flicked boogers at us all from the back row, who enjoyed picking fights and causing trouble, who left us achingly writing our homework with bruised arms. A faint echo is all I get. Yeah, it's the guy. Who knew? Clearly my elementary-school self judged him prematurely, and I carried that predjudice forward. Somewhere inside the obnoxious troublemaker were the seeds of this new person. A person who contributes much to our world.
So Bully made good. I am glad that he did... ...it somehow seems redemptive. But I feel guilty for assuming he wouldn't, and wonder if we aren't failing many of our boys if they can be percieved as so futureless in school, and yet be so much once they hit the real world. I wonder what Bully's story is... Did he change all at once? Was there a series of transformative events in his life? Or did he just slowly start opening up, once he was away from the strictures, cliques and repressions of the school environment?
I wonder...
But I'm not sure I'll be reaching out to Bully to discuss all this. My arm is still sore.
Peace,
LE
'Bully McFister' is a fictional name that I made up to relate this story, but the story itself is true. For anyone who is actually named this, I pray your life is at least as redemptive as that of my 'Bully'. And for those working and suffering with today's 'Bullies' I ask you to take note. God is everywhere, indeed. Maybe your 'Bully' needs an outlet, a friend, a big brother, or a role model, maybe the investment in him is hard and painful, but he has real potential too. (And I reccommend thick sweaters to protect your arms.)

No More Barns
With reference to last week's lectionary lesson;
To be sung to a country, sprightly melody.
There ain't no barns in heaven,
Lest maybe you are a cow;
And you won't need a big bank vault-
For treasure anyhow;
So don't go building storage,
For things that you don't need;
If you give away what you can share,
You'll find you're rich indeed!
May your kindness and generosity build you mansions in the hereafter...
Love to all!

Discerning the Spirits
I can often see what website my visitors came from, and if they came through a search engine, what they searched for.
And many people come to my site looking to see if their dreams come from a holy, or evil source.
Not wanting anyone to go away empty handed who came seeking, let me share my thinking on this topic:
1) God is everywhere and in everything and everyone, and loves you, no matter who you are or what you have done. What does this have to do with dreams? Well, it is a fundamental premise, the foundation upon which the theology that energizes me rests, and it informs my understanding of dreams.
2) We are complex beings with many different, conflicting feelings and ways of thinking. Some of these we supress, ignore, set aside, or deny.
3) Our minds choose from our many life experiences and conditions to help us 'process' things which concern us both in our dreams, and in what we notice while awake.
4) Spiritual forces, internal or external, can and do influence us.
So....
5) As God loves us, a message from God will never count us, or by extension, anyone as hopelessly corrupt. Messages that state or imply worthlessness and hopelessness are not from holy sources.
6) God is unlikely to order you to break the ten commandments, or harm others. (Turn to the Bible for guidance.)
7) More generally, messages from holy sources should eventually make sense in the light of faith, community and love.
8) Share your dreams, visions, signs and insights with your ministers and friends in the faith, and listen to their advice.
9) Write your experience down, and return to it later for fresh insight.
10) Watch for coincidences that seem to confirm or contradict your thoughts.
11) Your dreams, however dark, may reflect repressed anger and other emotions about past harms or slights, and even chemical imbalances or reactions. You should seek psychological or psychiatric help with your visions, signs, and dreams if they interfere with your life in a negative way.
12) Holy messages will be confirmed by prayer.
Peace to you, and may God's blessings surround you!

Five Tasks
Share truth
Create peace
Give space
Make time
Be good
Share truth, because truth is the coin of wisdom, the river that life swims in, and the raw material of civilization.
Create peace, because noise, enimity, and war are poison to thought, care, and life
Give space, because space is the dwelling place of dignity and honor, and food for the spirit.
Make time, because within moments of time are found infinities that can be turned powerfully to the service of light.
Be good, because in being good, you instantiate God.
