Meditation: We must listen for God speaking through each other
The problem is:
In order to speak to you;
For you to understand;
It seems like I must speak as an adult.
But for me to tell you the truth;
For us to truly communicate;
For your heart to hear me;
I must speak as a child.
And it may very well be
that there are no words at all
that express what we feel.
In which case
I ask that you imagine
the tears in my eyes
and the way my face crumples
and bends.
Somewhere
the other parts of our hearts
are hidden
Today we can only
try and hope
to remember.

A Winter Faith (Reprise)
Proposed Antiphon: Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God
Cruel wintry winds
Howl, hiss and blow
Across the ice
Over the snow
Bare trees poke up
No life is seen
The ice gives all
A glassy sheen
Nothing moves
Lest blown about
High up above
Cold stars are out
Your face is numb
Your fingers chill
Breath a brief cloud
And all is still
Below the snow
Below the ice
In buried peace
Lie seeds and mice
Fish dream fish dreams
Deep in the ponds
While cruel winds whip
The cattail fronds
Chipmunks sleep tight
And dream of sun
Of nuts and grain
Of chipmunk fun
Down in the mud
The frogs all sleep
Turtles mark time
In burrows deep
Warmth will return
The ice will go
And life will rise
And water flow
Snow drops will leap
Out of their grave
Then crocuses;
These plants are brave
The buds will swell
And burst and bloom
The earth will shed
This wintry gloom
But bravest, first
Sign of the mild
The Christmas birth;
The holy Child
Reminding us
This wintry strife
Lies briefly over
Our vibrant life
From out of dark
Comes life and light
Showing us God's
Power and might.

My Shepherd Is The Lord (Reprise)
My shepherd is the Lord
For nothing shall I want
In pastures green I rest
From waters still I drink
My soul my God restores
In fear God gives me strength
When lost God leads me home
And keeps me as God's own
God names me as his child
My sins for me forgives
With oil anoints my head
And sees to all my needs
My home is with the Lord
With God I'll always be
In joy God leads me out
With love God leads me home
In dark I have no fear
In trouble I have peace
In God I put my trust
For God is always near
In faith I have my life
and rise when life is done
The Lord keeps me each day
In life eternaly

No Resolution
The chant doesn’t resolve
Nor the song
They fade away
They end
On a half-tone
On an unfinished phrase
And today my life feels like that
Half finished
Between this and that
Not at the beginning
Nor at the end
But somewhere in between
And it isn’t really clear
That I will ever find that end
That resolution
And that makes me sad
Because I am trained
To plan
To achieve
To make goals and meet them
To do more
But, I am advised
Life is not about
The things you check off a list
But more about
The relationships you build along the way.
Now.
How to put that on my To-Do List?

Hold On
The land is grey
and cold winds blow
the rain spots down
mixed in with snow
The reeds sigh in
the the wind so cold
their roots hold tight
to mud and mold
The grass and reeds
are bleached light dun
by wind and rain
and distant sun
Around their roots
the mud lies black
around the ponds
ice-water, black
The ponds seem dead
abandoned, left
-of mammals, bugs and fish
bereft
The eagle eye
sees more below
within the depths
a greenish glow
Life perseveres
and will return
and send up shoots
and uncoil fern
Hold on through one more storm
and then
wild life will arise
again

You Are Given Now
We have only a moment
Not an hour
Or a day
Or a week
Or a month
Or years, decades, centuries, millennia
We have only a moment to trust
A moment to love
A moment to care
A moment to believe
Who that was who came before
- you cannot know
And who comes after
- you cannot see
But you have now
Use it to believe the best
To do the best
And be as much
As fun
As awesome
As inspired
As you can
You are given now
Use it

The Crazy Lady and the Angel
On the section of the Berlin wall located near Battery Park City
The crazy lady and the angel
Stand on the wall
The crazy lady on the outside
The safe side
The ‘go about your business’ side
She wears bright colors
Her skin is green
Her lips are brilliant red
She is lively and creative
The angel is on the inside
Where people used to get killed just for walking
For running to freedom
She is harder to see
But she is there
Who painted her, and when?
Who saw her in those days?
Was she the last thing someone saw?
Perhaps she was meant to comfort, to mourn, and not be consoled
To commemorate children, brothers and sisters, parents, friends, cousins lost
Perhaps that was her purpose
Certainly she does that now
Now that she no longer stands in the shadow of machine guns and barbed wire
Now that she is a curiosity, and a memorial
And it strikes me that life is like this
There is the wild and crazy ‘go about your business’ side
And the serious side
The side of life and death
where people struggle for life and freedom
Where angels stand close to comfort and assist us
It is good to be bright, lively and creative
But let us also be strong and helpful
And stand to help those who struggle for life and freedom

O Lord of Life and Death
O Lord of Life and Death
We thank you for the saints
Who left to us the word
And sang and taught and gave
And bled and suffered much
O Lord of Life and Death
Preserve the gifts they gave
Tend the light of the saints
For those yet to be born
Who will have much to learn
O Lord of Life and Death
Help us to remember
Those who went before us
All that they did for us
And all that they were and are

Who Is?
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
John 7:29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
John 8:23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
John 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
John 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my [sheep], and am known of mine.
John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
John 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will [my] Father honour.
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for [so] I am.
John 13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he].
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe me that I [am] in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
John 15:5 I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 16:32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
John 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
Exd 3:6 Moreover he said, I [am] the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Exodus 3:13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, [when] I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What [is] his name? what shall I say unto them?
Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Jesus Is.

Raise Your Light!
The sun rises, the sun sets
The moon waxes and wanes
The green life rises and leafs out
Fauns and children are born and grow
Old people hold hands, walking into the sunset
Rain waters the earth
Blue skies catch our breath
Birds sing
Fish splash
Squirrels leap
Chipmunks search the undergrowth for seeds
Woodpeckers knock, while skunks hunt for grubs below
Tiny sparks of life burrow in the earth and dance in the air
People help each other
People they know
And people they do not know
They set up funds, institutions, and ways of life to see to the care and shelter of others
For people they will never meet, for those who will come long after they have gone
Others have labored, and we have entered into their labors
Good is not the exception
We live in a very blessed world
We do not light a single lamp in the darkness
But add our light to the constellations lighting the sky
We do not sing alone in a vile place
But join the celestial chorus
There are those who do not hear
Who turn away
Who see the dark first, who struggle to pick out any good
Who cannot see how very blessed we are
Who cannot imagine the world of sharing that we really live in
And we must sing to them
And raise our light, our hearts
There is enough grace,
enough good,
… enough God for all of us
Raise your light!

A Future Full of Stars
Arthur C Clarke, father of the idea of communications satelites and the idea of of using geosynchronous orbits for them, prolific author, polio survivor, scuba diver, and environmentalist passed on to his reward at his home in Sri Lanka today. He was 90 years old.
Wikipedia has a fairly good article on his life, and the Fox has a decent write-up from AP. I suggest reading them, and thinking about this life, where it started with the "War to End all Wars", how it was changed by World War II, and how this man with an active mind re-tooled himself, several times, and helped to change the world.
For me this passing is a milestone. Clarke came from the world that was, and wrote about the world that he thought might come to be, some of which came to be, and some of which still might come to pass. The story of his life and how it wove into the movement of history reminds us that the journey continues, to this day, and that the future continues unfolding for us. Our job is to continue, to work to breathe life and love into it.
May we find that it is full of stars.
Peace,
LE

Here's Mud In Your Eye:
100 Words on Dirt (John 9:1-11):
He rubbed dirt in his eyes!
What?
The man they are calling ‘Teacher’.
Oh, the new prophet-guy, Jesus. You said he put dirt in someone’s eyes?
Worse, he took dirt, he spit on it, made mud and rubbed it in this man’s eyes!
The man didn’t try to stop him?
No, No, he was blind.
What, it wasn’t bad enough that he was blind in the first place? Didn’t anyone else try to stop him?
No, we didn’t think of it – and it made him see!
He puts dirt in people’s eyes and makes them see; now that’s a miracle.
Peace,
LE

That Evening
That evening, after it was dark, one of the chief men of the city came secretly to speak with him.
His name was Nicodemus, and after he had been welcomed, the two of them sat on a bench in the courtyard, with the stars glinting down at them, and a pleasant evening breeze carrying the smell of night-blooming flowers past. They do not speak rapidly, and although thoughtful, are casual with each other:
Nicodemus: Teacher, we know you are from God, because the signs you show us are the work of God, and no one could do them who is not with God.
Jesus: Yet none - no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again.
Nicodemus: How can I be 'born again' - an old man like me? I certainly can't go climbing back into my mother's womb!
Jesus: No one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of the water and the spirit - what is born of flesh is flesh, and what is born of spirit is spirit - this should not astonish you.
The spirit works differently from the way of the flesh - it is more like the wind, -we cannot tell where it comes from, or where it goes, but when it is blowing, we sure know it is there!
Nicodemus: I don't get it.
Jesus: Search your heart, and you will know what I say is true. Do you not teach as much in the temple?
I am telling you what we both know and have seen, ...and yet it is difficult for to recieve. If you cannot hear these things that we share, how will you accept what I have to tell you about heaven?
But I will tell you anyway - and I know this, because the Son has seen Heaven:
The Son of Man must be lifted up - just as Moses lifted up the brass serpent in the wilderness, so that those who believe in him - whomever they are - may have eternal life.
This must happen because God loves the world, loves the world so much that he will give his only Son, so that everyone who belives in him will not die, but instead may have eternal life.
Mind you, God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that it might be saved.
And the nightengale sang, and the two talked late into the night as the perfume of the night blooming flowers drifted around them and the stars twinkled.

Carnival or Shrove Tuesday?
Carnival has arrived this year wrapped in gauze.
Lent is early this year, arriving almost as early as it can, and today is Carnival.
And I don't feel festive.
Instead I feel in need of blankets and bandages.
Comfort and quiet.
Time to heal life's wounds.
Time to grow and seek quietly.
And so today's fog, the wet quietness of the day, the muffled shapes and sounds seem in tune with my mood.
A gauzey bandage over a bruised life.
A chance to heal.
A time of peace.
Today for me will be more of the 'Shrove Tuesday' than 'Carnival'.
Shrove Tuesday, when we confess our sins before our Lenten fast.
A time to confess and be healed.
May your Lent also start with the kind of day that you need.

All Lenten Thoughts
ps: I am returning to rotating the meditation or antiphon that appears in this blog's description. I never intended to stop rotating it, but life got busy, and the one I had up seemed so appropriate; 'For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.'
pps: And look at the meditation that was up next: "I'm giving up being angry.". Great for the start of Lent, and great to follow my post 'The Others'. I think I smell the Holy Spirit in this...
Peace,

So
So:
If we don't have sin from Adam,
Or Cain, or from the Jews;
If we are not corrupted
Then why is Christ good news?
Why did God come to us
Why did he have to die?
Does tossing out original sin
Make Christian faith a lie?
Christ was not big on judging
He did not tally sin
He did not judge between us
Did not say; "You aren't in!"
He was named; 'God is with us';
And he said; "The kingdom's near";
He said to love each other
As our God holds us each dear
He said to treat each other
As we'd like, if we were they
He named us sisters, brothers;
These are the things he'd say
So why did Jesus come to us?
To show that God is near;
To show God's great love for us;
To make God's message clear.
And why the cross and calvary?
Why did Christ have to die?
To show how much God loved us
To draw to God each eye.
So let's learn to love each other;
Let us be calm and kind
Let's leave old wrongs and grudges
In the dust behind
Let's live through Christ's commandment;
To love each other well,
So that when some person meets us;
That we're Christian, they can tell.

Words of Comfort
There are many who feel rejected and judged by the faith - judged unworthy - found to be reprobate - irredeemable and vile, doomed to torment, cast out of community, shunned.
It is for them I copy out the following words of comfort. May meditating on them bring you joy in this Advent season:
From John 12:
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
From John 3:
God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
From 1 Timothy 1:
This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
From 1 John 2:
If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins.
From Romans 8:
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? [...] I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
From 1 John 1:
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
May you find joy in your path this Advent season, wherever your wanderings take you.

Are you Saved?
Are you saved... ...when were you saved?
People used to ask a lot.
We do speak of salvation sometimes now,
But more often not.
Is saving what happens in this life?
Or does it happen when we die?
Can it happen a long time later,
When in the grave we lie?
Can we be saved in both,
Can we be saved again?
Do we know what saving is?
Can you please explain?
Is saving like pickling,
Or like a photo that we take?
Or is saving like a change
Like love or when hearts break?
And did Jesus save us long ago,
Or does he save today?
And when we say our God came down to save us,
What do we mean? What way?
And if the saved can fall, can they fall from grace in death?
Can you still fall from grace when you can't draw a breath?
Are these important questions,
or do we all just need
to hear God's word and do it?
That would be good indeed!

In Our Furry Cousins
I heard a strange cry this morning;
An insistent cry;
A mournful, catbird-like cry;
It was a young squirrel, sitting on a branch,
Calling to her mortally wounded brother;
Who crouched, groggy with his injuries;
In the middle of the road.
I was able to get the little wounded animal into a box;
With shredded paper in the bottom for litter;
But it rapidly expired.
There was little I could do for our little brother;
With his wonderful fluffy tail;
And his soft creamy underbelly;
His clever paws, and his bright eyes;
I have prayed that God will accept his little soul;
Into God’s everlasting garden;
Where the trees are full of nuts and fruit;
And the ground is soft and forgiving;
And I also pray for the little lonely girl-squirrel;
Whose brother was taken from her so early;
And whom she so clearly mourned.
Something of the unifying life,
Something of God;
Dwells in these our furry cousins;
Our ability to love did not spring from nothing,
But grew, evolved from the little loves of creatures like these.
Somewhere in our ancestral tree,
Dwelt elders not unlike these;
Little lives and little souls;
Who lived, and loved, and leapt;
And who knew what it is to mourn.
Brother Squirrel was laid to rest near his family
beneath the giant oak tree where he lived.
